God of war 4 story12/28/2022 ![]() ![]() God of War has dramatically changed, but ultimately for the better, and this structure is a big part of that, in addition to all its storytelling advancements. There are secrets upon secrets, side missions upon side missions in this world, way past anything we’ve seen in past games, and assuming I can return to them once the story is complete, will get me to continue to play the game long after credits roll.Īgain, I hope that “there are open world components and secrets and a lot of loot” isn’t too spoilery, as I only bring it up to further sell you on the game, as it’s a part of it that I really love, and was not expecting to see in this new installment. In this sense, God of War is a less linear game than even something like Uncharted 4, which inserted more “open world” exploration segments, but nothing to the extent of what we see here. I was not expecting this to be such a loot-focused game, but it really is a major component. It also has elements of Monster Hunter to it as well, as certain pieces of armor can only be crafted once you’ve killed X number of enemies of a certain type and collected X shards/feathers/etc from them. The upgrade system which has you attaching runes to your weapons, equipping individual pieces of armor, socketing gems into your armor and even upgrading your son’s armor, makes hunting for rare, legendary and exotic loot worthwhile. God of War really is a looter in many ways now. But you can explore many of these zones early, and come up with extra cash, XP and gear for your trouble. Many you cannot complete until you unlock certain items later in the story, as most puzzles are item-based, putting up gates that require you to get through aspects of the main story to a certain extent. Your son actually says things like “we could go or we could explore a while!” and you’re meant to cruise around on your boat to all these different areas and uncover their puzzles and secrets. The game is designed to have you mess around in these areas between missions. And none of this is directly connected to the main story. But there are also just loads upon loads of secrets, chests with valuable items, combat encounters that are some of the most challenging in the game. There are side quests littered throughout this zone, helping spirits or other characters find this or that. Coastlines where you can dock your boat, and this is about the time you realize that God of War has gone open world, at least to a certain extent. ![]() After a few more story missions, the water recedes and you start to see a whole bunch of coastlines open up. That changes once you reach the “main” area of the game, a large lake.
